At the time of writing, we’re all caught up on in the COVID-19 lockdown of 2020 and that means we can’t go out to our favourite restaurants, cafes and other places that sell our fave foods.
To counter this, a lot of places have taken to solely doing home delivery, but some places aren’t able to do that but are still making the effort to try and help us enjoying the meals we enjoy. IKEA, the Swedish home furniture store, is famous not only for it’s flat-pack furniture but also it’s Swedish meatballs that it sells in it’s in-store cafes and in the home food department of it’s store.
So, while under lockdown, IKEA shared the recipe for their meatballs – and the cream sauce – for us to make at home so I decided to delve in to try it out and see if it was an easy assemble or a complete flatpack nightmare.

- For the meatballs:
- 500g Beef Mince
- 250g Pork Mince
- 1 Onion, finely chopped
- 1 Garlic Clove, crushed or minced
- 100g Breadcrumbs
- 1 x Egg
- 5 Tbsp Whole Milk
- Salt & Pepper
- For the Cream Sauce:
- Dash of oil
- 40g Butter
- 40g Plain Flour
- 150ml Vegetable Stock
- 150ml Beef Stock
- 150ml Double Cream
- 2 Tsp Soy Sauce
- 1 Tsp Dijon Mustard
Instructions
For the meatballs, combine beef and pork mince and mix with your fingers to break up any lumps.
Add finely chopped onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg and mix. Add milk and season well with salt and pepper.
Shape mixture into small, round balls.
Place on a plate, cover and store in the fridge for 2 hours (this will help them hold their shape while cooking).
In a frying pan, heat oil on medium heat. When hot, gently add meatballs and brown on all sides.
When browned, add to an ovenproof dish and cover.
Place in a hot oven (180°C/160°C (fan)/350°F/Gas Mark 4) and cook for a further 30 minutes.
For the cream sauce, melt 40g of butter in a pan. Whisk in 40g of plain flour and stir for 2 mins.
Add 150ml of vegetable stock and 150ml of beef stock and continue to stir.
Add 150ml double cream, 2tsp of soy sauce, and 1tsp of Dijon Mustard. Bring it to simmer and allow sauce to thicken.
When ready to eat, serve with your favourite potatoes - either creamy mash or mini new boiled potatoes. Enjoy!
